Dr. John Becker is a cantankerous, sarcastic, and gruff doctor living in the Bronx. In season 5 episode 19, titled "Ms. Fortune," Becker is approached by a woman named Trudy (guest star Kathy Griffin) who claims to be a psychic. Trudy, who has recently lost her father, has visions of people's fortunes and wants Becker to help her use her gift to do good.
At first, Becker is skeptical and dismissive of Trudy's claims. He believes that she is simply trying to scam him and tells her to leave his office. However, when Trudy has a vision of a patient's impending death, Becker begins to take her seriously.
As the episode progresses, Trudy's predictions come true, and Becker becomes increasingly curious about her abilities. He pairs up with Trudy to conduct scientific experiments to find out if her psychic powers are real or if there is a logical explanation for them.
Meanwhile, Reggie struggles to find a new job after being laid off. She feels lost and unsure of what to do with her life. Jake tries to be supportive but ends up inadvertently making things worse. After some soul searching and a heart-to-heart with Linda, Reggie decides to take the leap and pursue her dream of going to law school.
As the episode comes to a close, Becker and Trudy discover that her visions are the result of a rare form of synesthesia. Becker is impressed by Trudy's unique abilities and newfound clarity, and Trudy is grateful for the opportunity to use her gift to help others. Reggie begins studying for the LSAT and is excited about her newfound direction in life.
Overall, "Ms. Fortune" is a heartwarming and funny episode that explores themes of skepticism, faith, and finding one's purpose in life. With standout performances from Ted Danson, Kathy Griffin, and the rest of the cast, this episode is a must-watch for fans of the show.
