Becker season 4 episode 9, titled "The Buddy System," follows the grumpy and opinionated Dr. John Becker (played by Ted Danson) as he reluctantly agrees to mentor a young boy named Jake (played by Angus T. Jones).
Becker's nurse, Margaret (played by Hattie Winston), has enlisted him to volunteer for the "Buddy System," a program that pairs up fatherless children with male mentors. Becker initially resists the idea, believing he is not cut out for working with children. However, Margaret convinces him to give it a chance.
Becker meets Jake, a shy and reserved 10-year-old, and the two begin their mentoring sessions. As they spend more time together, Becker learns that Jake is struggling in school and has recently started acting out in class.
As Becker tries to help Jake with his schoolwork, he discovers that the boy is dyslexic. Without the support and resources to address his learning difficulties, Jake had been slipping further and further behind in his studies.
With Becker's help, Jake begins to make progress in school and gains more confidence in himself. Becker also begins to open up to Jake, sharing some of his own personal struggles and vulnerabilities. The two develop a strong bond, and Jake even gives Becker a nickname: "Dr. B."
However, their relationship is put to the test when Jake's absentee father suddenly reappears and wants to become involved in his son's life. Becker must navigate the complex emotions that Jake is feeling towards his father and figure out what role he should play in the situation.
Throughout the episode, themes of fatherhood, mentorship, and overcoming challenges are explored. "The Buddy System" is a heartwarming and poignant episode that showcases the growth and transformation of both Becker and Jake.
