In Becker season 3 episode 8, titled "Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em," the episode begins with the titular character, Dr. John Becker, complaining about the new smoking ban in New York City. Frustrated that he can no longer smoke in his own office, Becker takes to smoking in his apartment complex's stairwell. That's when he meets a new tenant, Lisa, who is also using the stairwell to smoke.
As the two begin to chat, Lisa reveals that she is a writer. When Becker asks to read some of her work, he becomes impressed by her talent. So much so that he offers to introduce her to his literary agent. Lisa is thrilled, but Becker's agent is hesitant to represent her. As it turns out, Lisa has written a novel based on her experience as a high-class escort, which the agent believes would be too controversial to publish.
Meanwhile, Jake, one of Becker's regular patients, announces that he has quit smoking. Becker is skeptical and accuses Jake of lying. In an effort to prove that he has quit, Jake invites Becker to a party at his church. At the party, Jake explains that he has found a new purpose in life and has joined a group called "The Blessed Brotherhood," which helps former smokers stay off cigarettes. Becker is still skeptical but comes around in the end.
As the episode progresses, Becker becomes increasingly determined to help Lisa get her book published. He even offers to help finance the publishing process himself. But Lisa is hesitant, feeling that Becker is becoming too involved in her personal life. Eventually, the two have a falling out and Lisa moves out of the apartment complex.
In the end, Becker realizes that he needs to let go of his own issues with smoking and focus on helping his patients. He encourages Jake to continue his road to recovery, and even offers to help Lisa find a new literary agent. As the episode concludes, Becker is seen smoking once again in the stairwell, but this time, he is joined by Jake and some other members of The Blessed Brotherhood.
"Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em" is a classic episode of Becker, with plenty of the show's trademark humor and heart. It tackles the issue of smoking and addiction in a way that is both relatable and entertaining. The episode also features some standout performances from the cast, particularly Ted Danson as John Becker and Hattie Winston as his nurse, Margaret. Overall, it's a must-watch for fans of the show.
