Ep 24. Allergies, Beakmania & Codes

  • March 12, 1994

Beakman's World is a science education show geared towards children, hosted by the eccentric and wacky Beakman. In season 2 episode 24, titled "Allergies, Beakmania & Codes", Beakman explores the fascinating and sometimes frustrating world of allergies, introduces a new dance craze called "Beakmania", and delves into the world of codes and cryptography.

The episode starts off with some big news from Beakman: he has discovered a new dance move that he calls "Beakmania". He proceeds to demonstrate the dance, which involves flapping arms and looking very silly. Despite his enthusiasm, his audience (consisting of two child actors and a rat puppet) is less than impressed. However, Beakman is undeterred and decides to make a music video in order to spread the Beakmania craze far and wide.

Next up, Beakman tackles the tricky topic of allergies. He starts by explaining that allergies are caused by our immune system mistaking harmless things like pollen or pet dander for dangerous invaders. With the help of his trusty assistants, Beakman demonstrates how allergies can cause all sorts of unpleasant symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, and runny nose. He also shows how people can use antihistamines and other medications to alleviate their allergy symptoms.

But Beakman isn't done with allergies yet! He goes on to explain how allergies can sometimes be life-threatening, especially in the case of anaphylaxis. He demonstrates how a severe allergic reaction can cause the airways to close up, making it difficult or impossible to breathe. Beakman stresses the importance of recognizing the signs of anaphylaxis and seeking medical help immediately.

After that intense segment, Beakman lightens the mood with a return to his Beakmania dance. He shows off some fan-submitted videos of kids doing the dance, proving that Beakmania is catching on. He even gets his rat puppet friend to join in on the fun.

Finally, Beakman turns his attention to the world of codes and cryptography. He explains that throughout history, people have used codes and ciphers to send secret messages. Beakman demonstrates a simple cipher that involves shifting letters along the alphabet (for example, A becomes B, B becomes C, and so on). He challenges his audience to try to crack his coded message.

But that's not all! Beakman also shows off some more complex codes used by spies and military personnel. He explains how even seemingly random strings of letters and numbers can hold secret messages if you know how to decode them. Beakman also touches briefly on the Enigma machine, a cryptographic device used by the Germans in World War II.

Overall, "Allergies, Beakmania & Codes" is a fun and educational episode of Beakman's World. As always, Beakman's wacky persona and entertaining segments make science accessible and engaging for kids. Whether your child is interested in dance crazes or cryptography, they're sure to learn something new in this episode.
