In Batman: The Animated Series season 2 episode 8, titled "Avatar," a new villain named the "Avatar" emerges in Gotham City and begins targeting prominent figures in the city. The Avatar has the ability to manipulate electronic devices, making him a formidable opponent for the Dark Knight.
As Batman attempts to figure out the Avatar's identity and motives, he discovers that the villain is somehow connected to the Virtual Reality company, GothCorp. Bruce Wayne visits the company, posing as an interested investor, and meets the CEO, Karl Rossum. Rossum reveals that he has developed a new Virtual Reality technology that allows users to enter a simulated world and interact with it as if it were real.
Meanwhile, the Avatar continues his attacks, causing chaos throughout Gotham. Batman eventually tracks the Avatar to GothCorp and confronts him. The Avatar, who is revealed to be one of Rossum's employees, explains that he is using the Virtual Reality technology to seek revenge against those who wronged him in the past.
As Batman attempts to apprehend the Avatar, he too becomes trapped in the Virtual Reality world. In this simulated reality, Batman faces off against various villains and is forced to confront his own inner demons. With the help of a mysterious figure calling himself "The Black Knight," Batman is able to find his way out of the Virtual Reality world and stop the Avatar's plan.
The episode ends with Bruce Wayne discussing the dangers of Virtual Reality technology and the need for caution with his trusted ally, Commissioner Gordon. As they talk, the Black Knight is seen watching from the shadows, hinting at the possibility of future encounters with this mysterious figure.
