Terry McGinnis returns as the futuristic Batman in season 2 episode 8 of Batman Beyond, Hooked Up. In this episode, Terry faces off against a brilliant new villain named Spellbinder, who's able to control people's perception of reality through a virtual reality headset.
Spellbinder, real name Dr. Kirby, is actually a former employee of Wayne-Powers who was fired for experimenting with the virtual reality technology in unethical ways. Seeking revenge on his former bosses, Kirby creates a new and improved VR headset and uses it to take control of the minds of Wayne-Powers executives.
Terry is alerted to the danger when his friend Max, who works at Wayne-Powers, starts behaving strangely and becomes unresponsive to Terry's attempts to communicate with her. Suspecting foul play, Terry investigates and discovers the extent of Spellbinder's control.
With the help of Bruce Wayne, Terry dons the Batman suit and enters the virtual reality world to confront Spellbinder. But the villain isn't easily defeated, and the virtual world becomes increasingly distorted and dangerous as Terry battles to regain control.
As the battle rages on, Terry also struggles to contain his own emotions and fears, as Spellbinder's powers tap into his deepest fears and anxieties. But with the help of his training and his willpower, Terry is able to overcome Spellbinder's control and save the executives from a catastrophic fate.
With Spellbinder apprehended, Terry reflects on the importance of staying grounded in reality and not getting too lost in virtual worlds. He also realizes that his own fears and doubts are something he'll continue to confront as Batman, and that he must stay vigilant and focused in order to protect the people of Gotham.
