In Barnwood Builders season 5 episode 5 titled "Old-School Takedown in Harrisville, W.V.", the crew tackles their biggest demolition project yet. They head to Harrisville, West Virginia to take on a massive two-story barn that has been standing for over 150 years.
The challenge is not just to take down the barn, but to do it in the "old-school" way - without using any heavy machinery. The builders will rely on only their own strength and traditional tools to carefully dismantle the barn piece by piece, saving as much of the original materials as possible.
The team starts by removing the roof of the barn, carefully taking apart each piece and setting it aside for later use. They then work their way down to the first floor, carefully prying and pulling off boards while avoiding any damage to the solid oak framing of the barn.
The builders discover some interesting features as they work, including a unique "root cellar" in the barn's foundation - a small room dug beneath the main floor where the family would originally store root vegetables to keep them cool. The crew removes the floorboards and excavates the space, finding some old glass bottles and other artifacts.
As the builders continue their work, they are joined by a group of local Amish carpenters who offer their expertise in tearing down old structures using traditional methods. The Amish team brings in some new tools and ideas, and they all work together to carefully dismantle the barn piece by piece.
The process takes several days, but the team is able to successfully take down the entire barn without any damage to the surrounding trees or structures. In fact, the builders are able to salvage a significant amount of the original materials, including the framing, boards, and even some of the old rusty nails.
Once the barn is completely disassembled, the builders load up their trucks and haul everything back to their shop in West Virginia. There, they will clean and sort the materials and begin the process of turning them into new structures and furnishings.
As always, the episode is filled with interesting stories and challenges, as the Barnwood Builders work to preserve a piece of history using their unique skills and dedication to doing things the old-fashioned way.
