Barney Miller is an American sitcom TV series created by Danny Arnold and Theodore J. Flicker. The show revolves around the professional and personal lives of the detectives working at the 12th Precinct police station in Manhattan.
Season 2 episode 9, entitled "You Dirty Rat" begins with Inspector Luger reading the newspaper for a job opening he plans to apply for at a different precinct. Meanwhile, the detectives carry on with their duties at the 12th Precinct.
One of the detectives, Chano Amenguale, arrests a man named Herbie Ziegler for shoplifting. However, they find out that he was not alone in the operation. A local grocer informs them that a woman accompanied him, but he could not identify her.
Captain Miller assigns Detective Nick Yemana to work on the case with Chano. They bring Ziegler back in for questioning, but he refuses to give up any information on the woman's identity.
Outside, a woman approaches Detective Wojohowicz claiming that her husband has gone missing. She provides them with the husband's last known location, which happens to be the same grocery store where Ziegler was caught shoplifting.
Captain Miller sends Wojohowicz to work on the missing person case, while sending Detective Harris to conduct a stakeout at the store in case the woman returns.
Yemana and Chano continue their interrogation with Ziegler, who begins to crack and finally reveals the identity of the woman who was with him during the shoplifting.
Upon Harris' return from his stakeout, he informs the Captain that the woman has indeed returned to the store. They arrest her, and she confesses to being involved in the shoplifting and to aiding in the disappearance of the missing husband.
At the end of the episode, the detectives joke around in the squad room, and Captain Miller congratulates them for a job well done.
Overall, "You Dirty Rat" is a classic episode of Barney Miller. It showcases the detectives' everyday work solving cases, and also their interaction with each other. The detectives' sense of humor and camaraderie is on display throughout the episode, but it also shows their ability to solve cases in an efficient and professional manner.
