Bar Rescue season 5 episode 1, titled "Bug Bite," follows host Jon Taffer as he travels to Las Vegas to rescue The Bungalow, a struggling beach bar and grill. The episode starts with Taffer visiting the bar dressed in his signature black suit and fedora. He is surprised to find that the bar is not located on the beach, despite its name, and that the decor inside is old and worn out.
Taffer meets with The Bungalow's owners, a married couple named Carlo and Christina Garcia, who are having trouble managing their staff and keeping up with the competition. Taffer learns that the bar has been losing money and that the staff is overworked and underpaid. He also discovers a major problem with the bar's food menu – it is generic, uninteresting, and full of frozen, processed ingredients.
Taffer decides that a complete overhaul is needed, starting with the menu. He brings in chef Jason Santos to help create a new, fresh menu that will attract customers. The new menu features high-quality, locally sourced ingredients and dishes that are unique and flavorful. Taffer also brings in a mixologist to revamp the bar's cocktail program, and designs new uniforms for the staff to give them a more professional look.
While the staff is adjusting to the changes in the bar, Taffer discovers another major issue – the patio is infested with bugs. He brings in an exterminator to address the problem, but it proves to be more difficult than expected. The exterminator has to fumigate the entire patio area, and the bar has to close for a few days to allow the chemicals to dissipate.
After the bar reopens, Taffer hosts a "soft opening" for the new menu and decor. The customers are impressed with the changes and the staff is excited to showcase their new skills. However, there are still a few kinks to work out – the kitchen struggles with timing and the staff is still getting used to the new procedures.
Taffer brings in a group of mystery diners to evaluate the staff and the food. After several undercover visits, the mystery diners report back to Taffer with their findings. They praise the new menu and the staff's improved attitudes, but ultimately find that there are still some issues with timing and consistency.
Taffer sits down with Carlo and Christina to discuss the mystery diners' findings and to give his final assessment of the bar. He tells them that they have made great progress, but that they need to continue to work on consistency and timing. He also tells them that the bar's location is not ideal, but that they can overcome that obstacle with the right marketing and promotions.
In the end, Taffer presents The Bungalow with a new name – The Sandbar – which he believes better reflects the bar's beachy vibe. The owners love the new name and are excited to continue implementing the changes that Taffer has recommended. The episode ends with Taffer visiting The Sandbar a few weeks later to see how the bar is doing. He is pleased to see that the staff is still enthusiastic and that the changes have had a positive impact on the bar's revenue.
