Ep 7. The Elephant

Bagpuss is a classic British children's television show that aired from 1974 to 1978. It tells the story of a magical, saggy old cloth cat named Bagpuss who lives in a dusty old shop with his owner, Emily. Each episode sees Bagpuss and his toy friends coming to life to solve a problem or help Emily with a task.

In season 1 episode 7, titled "The Elephant," Emily brings a large toy elephant into the shop to be repaired. The elephant has a broken leg that needs to be fixed, and Bagpuss and his friends are more than happy to help out.

First, the mice make a model of the elephant's leg out of toothpicks and glue so they can practice repairing it. While they work on this, Bagpuss and the other toys listen to a story about how elephants have long memories and how they never forget.

Next, Professor Yaffle the bookend examines the elephant's leg and determines that it needs to be replaced entirely. He suggests they use an old broom handle to make a new leg. While he works on this, the mice take the opportunity to explore the inside of the elephant and make some interesting discoveries.

Finally, the new leg is assembled and attached to the elephant. To test it out, Bagpuss and the toys go on a wild ride with the elephant into the countryside. They have a picnic and enjoy the fresh air, but when it's time to go back to the shop, the elephant's new leg starts to wobble.

The toys realize that they forgot to nail the leg on properly, so they stop to fix it before continuing on their way. When they finally make it back to the shop, Emily is thrilled with the repaired elephant. She puts it on display in the window for all to see.

As always, the episode ends with Bagpuss and his friends returning to their lifeless state while Emily sings them a lullaby and tucks them in for the night.

"The Elephant" is a heartwarming episode that teaches the value of perseverance and problem-solving. It also showcases the love and care Emily has for her toys, as well as their dedication to helping her in any way they can. With its charming characters and imaginative storytelling, Bagpuss continues to be a beloved classic for generations of children.
