- August 25, 2013
Bad Ink is a show that revolves around undoing the tattoos gone wrong. The show stars a tattoo artist, Rob Ruckus and a punk rock enthusiast, Dirk Vermin who take it upon themselves to hunt down bad tattoos and fix them. In season 1 episode 5 titled "When Tattoo Animals Attack," Rob and Dirk are on a mission to correct bad animal tattoos.
The episode starts with Rob and Dirk receiving a call from a guy named Chris who has a tattoo of a bulldog on his arm. The tattoo was done by one of Chris's friends, who had no experience in tattooing. The tattoo was so bad that people thought he had a rat on his arm. Chris wants the guys to cover it up with a tattoo of his brother's dog whom he holds very dear. Rob and Dirk agree to take up the challenge and visit Chris's house to take a look at the tattoo.
The tattoo was indeed a disaster, the bulldog's face had a weird smile and looked nothing like a bulldog. Rob and Dirk were in shock but, were determined to rectify the mistake. They decided that the best way to cover up the bad tattoo would be to darken the area around the existing tattoo and add more details to the dog's face to make it look realistic. But, before they could start, they realized that the design Chris wanted was nothing like the picture they were shown. The picture was a head-on picture of the dog, but Chris wanted the tattoo of the dog jumping in the air. Dirk was not pleased, but Rob convinced him to go ahead with the design since it meant a lot to Chris.
Meanwhile, Dirk receives a call from a girl named Sondra, whose tattoo has gone horribly wrong. She had a picture of an orangutan tattooed on her arm for her love of primates, but the tattoo was a nightmare. The orangutan looked like a cross between a zombie, an alien, and a monkey. Dirk agrees to meet Sondra the next day and look at the tattoo.
The next day, Dirk and Rob meet Sondra, who tells them that the tattoo was done by a friend of hers who had no experience in tattooing. The tattoo was so bad that it made Sondra feel embarrassed. Dirk examines the tattoo and tells her that there's no quick fix and that they should figure out a design that covers most of the existing tattoo. They agreed to do a forest themed tattoo that would include the orangutan. Rob suggested that they should add some color to the tattoo to make it stand out.
Back at Chris's house, Rob and Dirk were ready to start the cover-up. Dirk outlines the dog's body, giving it more form and adding shadows to make it look realistic. Rob started adding details to the dog's fur. They face the challenge of covering up the existing tattoo, which took up a lot of space. The guys were happy with the progress, but they noticed that the tattoo was still pretty small compared to the space it had on Chris's arm. They decided to incorporate the flower petals around the dog to fill up some of the space.
Later, the guys visit Sondra's house and start on the tattoo. Dirk works on the orange and brown-colored leaves, while Rob starts outlining the orangutan's head. They faced the challenge of covering up the old tattoo, which had a lot of lines that they could not work around. To get around this, Rob added more fur and shadows to the orangutan's head, giving it more dimension. They finish the tattoo with a tree and leaves around the orangutan to make it look more realistic.
The episode ends with Chris looking at his new tattoo, which he loved. The new tattoo of his brother's dog was bigger and more realistic. He was happy to have the bad tattoo gone and that he could finally show off his tattoo with pride. Sondra sees her new tattoo and is overjoyed. Her new tattoo was gorgeous, and she was happy that she could finally wear short sleeves without feeling self-conscious.
In conclusion, Bad Ink season 1 episode 5, "When Tattoo Animals Attack" was a must-watch for anyone who has a bad tattoo they want to cover up.
