In episode 1 of season 2 of Babylon Berlin, the audience is transported back to 1929, several months after the events of season one. The economic situation in Berlin is turbulent, and the citizens are looking for a change in political leadership. The episode opens with a dramatic scene of a train crash that took place near the Polish border. It's quickly revealed that there may have been a political motive behind the accident, which sets the tone for the rest of the episode.

As the story unfolds, we see our protagonist Gereon Rath (played by Volker Bruch) taking on a new case, involving a young woman who has gone missing. Gereon is joined once again by his partner, Charlotte Ritter (played by Liv Lisa Fries), who has been promoted to a new role within the police department. The case quickly becomes complicated as it becomes clear that the missing woman was part of an underground group of communists who were advocating for the overthrow of the current government.

Meanwhile, we catch up with other characters from season one, including Gereon's half-brother, Anno (played by Mišel Matičević), who is struggling with his own personal demons. Anno's relationship with his former lover, the nightclub singer Nikoros (played by Fritzi Haberlandt), takes a turn for the worse as he becomes increasingly consumed by his addiction to morphine.

The episode also reintroduces us to several of the show's villains, including the corrupt police commissioner, Wendt (played by Matthias Brandt), and the flamboyant nightclub owner, Alfred Nyssen (played by Lars Eidinger). Both characters are up to their old tricks, scheming and manipulating those around them for their own gain.

One of the highlights of the episode is the introduction of a new character, the powerful and enigmatic Russian expat Lev (played by Ivan Shvedoff). Lev is a member of the Black Reichswehr, a far-right paramilitary group that is gaining influence in Berlin. His presence adds an extra layer of tension and intrigue to the story, as his motives are unclear and his loyalties are constantly in question.

Overall, episode 1 of season 2 of Babylon Berlin sets a thrilling and complex stage for the rest of the season. The show's striking visuals, authentic period details, and stunning performances make it a must-see for any fan of historical drama. As the characters navigate the political turmoil and personal struggles of 1920s Berlin, the audience is drawn into a world of intrigue, danger, and passion. With so many plotlines and characters to follow, it's clear that Babylon Berlin is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious and exciting dramas of recent years.
