Jenna Hamilton has always struggled to fit in with the popular crowd at Palos Hills High School. Despite her social awkwardness, she has managed to make some friends, including her best friend Tamara and her boyfriend Matty. However, her ongoing feud with her nemesis Sadie Saxton has made her life more difficult than ever.
In the ninth episode of the third season, entitled "Reality Check," Jenna is forced to confront some hard truths about her life. When her English teacher assigns the class to write a personal essay about their deepest fears, Jenna is initially reluctant to participate. However, she eventually decides to take the assignment seriously and writes a revealing essay about her own insecurities.
Meanwhile, Sadie is dealing with her own problems as she tries to deal with her unresolved feelings for Matty. She confides in Tamara, who offers her some unexpected advice. Jenna's mother Lacey also has a major storyline in this episode, as she embarks on a new career path as a real estate agent.
As Jenna's essay becomes the subject of gossip among her classmates, she realizes that she may have shared too much. She worries that her honesty may have alienated her from her friends and family, but ultimately she finds comfort in the fact that her vulnerability has brought her closer to those she loves.
