Jenna Hamilton is struggling to deal with her newfound popularity after a rumor spreads that she attempted suicide. As she navigates her way through the halls of Palos Hills High School, Jenna finds that her new friends are not always what they seem. In "The Way We Weren't," the third episode of the first season, Jenna begins to question the authenticity of her relationship with Matty, her hunky crush who seems to be keeping her at arm's length.
Jenna and Matty have a complicated history - they've been hooking up for months, but Matty refuses to acknowledge their relationship publicly. When Jenna discovers that Matty has been with other girls, she begins to wonder if he really cares about her at all. In an attempt to find some answers, Jenna turns to her best friend Tamara for advice. Tamara, who is obsessed with being popular, encourages Jenna to play hard to get and ignore Matty's texts and calls.
Meanwhile, Jenna's mom is dealing with her own relationship issues. She's been secretly seeing a man named Patrick, and decides to introduce him to her daughters. But as soon as Patrick arrives, it becomes clear that he and Jenna's dad have a history. Jenna's dad is less than thrilled to see Patrick, and it's clear that there are some unresolved issues between the two men.
As Jenna tries to navigate her way through her relationship with Matty, she also has to deal with the fallout of her mom's surprise introduction. She learns that sometimes the people we think we know the best are not at all who we thought they were. "The Way We Weren't" is a lesson in the importance of being true to ourselves and our feelings.
