Iron Man is Born! is the third episode of season one of the television series The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The episode is centered around the birth of Tony Stark's superhero alter ego, Iron Man. The episode opens with Tony demonstrating a new weapon to the military in Afghanistan. However, his convoy is ambushed, and Tony is captured by the military group Ten Rings.
While in captivity, Tony is forced to build a missile for Ten Rings. However, Tony uses the materials given to him to build an electromagnet to keep shrapnel from his heart. Tony also constructs a suit of armor that allows him to escape from Ten Rings. Once back in the States, Tony sets out to perfect the design of his suit of armor and become Iron Man.
As Tony works on his suit, SHIELD director Nick Fury approaches him with an invitation to join the Avengers. However, Tony declines, believing that he can handle threats on his own. This mindset is put to the test when the villainous Crimson Dynamo arrives in New York City.
Iron Man battles the villain and is able to defeat him with the help of SHIELD agents Black Widow and Hawkeye. However, Iron Man's suit is damaged in the fight, and he must return to his workshop to repair it. While doing so, Thor arrives on Earth to warn the Avengers of an imminent threat from his brother, Loki.
Iron Man joins the rest of the Avengers to stop Loki's plan. They are able to save the world from his schemes and stop the invasion of the alien race known as the Chitauri. With this victory, Iron Man finally agrees to join the Avengers full-time.
Throughout the episode, there are various nods to the comic book origins of Iron Man. From his armored suit to the electromagnet keeping shrapnel from his heart, the episode predominantly features the origin story of the hero. Additionally, the episode introduces audiences to SHIELD, the intelligence agency that Nick Fury is in charge of. Black Widow and Hawkeye both make appearances as agents of SHIELD, setting up their roles in future episodes.
Overall, Iron Man is Born! is a thrilling and action-packed episode that introduces viewers to one of the most iconic members of the Avengers. The episode effectively balances its focus on Tony Stark and his transformation into Iron Man with the larger threat posed by Loki. The episode leaves viewers excited for what's to come in future episodes of the series.
