Ep 1. The Boy in the Iceberg

Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived in harmony, but everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother Katara and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world.

In the first episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender, we are introduced to siblings Katara and Sokka, who are living in the Water Tribe village of the Southern Water Tribe. The tribe is a desolate place, with few resources and little hope. The frozen tundra of their village is bleak, but the siblings are used to it. They are surprised, however, to find something very strange in the ice. As Sokka is out hunting, he discovers a boy in an iceberg.

Katara, curious about the boy, takes her brother with her to check out the iceberg. As they approach, they see that there is a marking on the iceberg that seems to hint that there might be something inside. With some effort, they manage to crack the ice open, revealing a boy who is very clearly not from their tribe.

The boy is revealed to be Aang, an airbender from the Air Nomads. The group learns from him that he has been frozen in the iceberg for a hundred years, which shocks them as they realize they have discovered the long missing Avatar.

While they are trying to figure out what to do with Aang, they are interrupted by the arrival of the Fire Nation. They arrived to capture the Avatar, believing him to be dead for a century.

The Fire Nation soldiers capture Sokka and Katara, but Aang is able to use his airbending to get them free and escape. With the soldiers chasing them, they eventually make their way to Aang's home, where he reveals that he fled after learning of his status as the Avatar and disappearing into the iceberg.

Meanwhile, Zuko, the Fire Nation prince on a mission to capture the Avatar, has located the Southern Water Tribe and sets out to find the Avatar. Back at Aang's home, the group realizes they must leave the area as they fear that the Fire Nation will eventually track them down.

The season 1 episode 1, The Boy in the Iceberg, sets the scene for an epic adventure. It introduces us to the main characters and the stakes for the entire series. We become familiar with the world, the bending abilities of the characters, and the politics that are at play within this world. The Avatar is believed to be dead and people have lost hope in the face of the endless war that has been caused by the Fire Nation. But with the appearance of Aang, the last Airbender and the Avatar, there is new hope. The episode is a great introduction that leaves audiences curious and excited for more.
