Ep 1. The Birth Of Astro Boy
- October 1, 1980
As the first episode of the 1980 version of Astro Boy, "The Birth of Astro Boy" serves as an introduction to the main protagonist and his origin story. Set in the futuristic world of 2030, the episode opens with Dr. Tenma, the brilliant scientist behind the creation of Astro Boy, grieving over the loss of his son Tobio. Despite his success in robotics and his inventions being used for the betterment of mankind, he feels guilty for not being able to save his own child.
Driven by his grief, Dr. Tenma decides to use his knowledge to recreate Tobio in the form of a powerful android. But after realizing the impossibility of bringing his son back to life, he instead chooses to give the robot life and consciousness of its own, naming it Astro Boy. Tenma's colleague Dr. O'Shay, who is also the head of the Ministry of Science, is initially skeptical of the creation, but is convinced after Astro Boy displays remarkable skills in the laboratory.
Astro quickly becomes the center of attention of the science ministry, with Dr. O'Shay attempting to improve his capabilities and preparing him for exhibitions and demonstrations. Astro Boy is shown to possess incredible strength, agility, speed, and a variety of inbuilt features such as a jet booster, laser weaponry, and the ability to fly.
However, as much as people are fascinated by Astro's abilities, he is not accepted by the world at large. People discriminate against him, calling him a monster and a freak and questioning his legitimacy as a sentient being. Astro Boy is constantly reminded of his status as an artificial creation, with the episode emphasizing the theme of humanity versus technology. Despite this, Astro remains curious and eager to learn about the world around him, and displays a childlike personality in interacting with other characters.
The episode concludes with a climactic action scene, as Astro Boy is sent to foil a bank robbery taking place in the city. Here, he showcases his incredible abilities, taking down the robbers with ease and earning the praise of Dr. O'Shay and the public. Astro finally receives some acceptance from society, albeit in the form of hero worship and superficial admiration.
"The Birth of Astro Boy" sets the foundation for the rest of the series, establishing Astro Boy as a powerful and complex protagonist while also creating a world that reflects societal issues and concerns surrounding the rise of technology and artificial intelligence. The story sheds light on the impact of technology on human life and the importance of acceptance and empathy towards those who might be different.
