In Ask This Old House season 19 episode 21, the team tackles two different projects: planting Echinaceas and completing a kitchen punch list.
First, Tom and Jenn head to a landscaping project where they plant Echinaceas, also known as coneflowers. These hardy flowers come in a variety of colors and are easy to maintain, making them a great addition to any garden. Tom and Jenn demonstrate how to properly prepare the soil for planting, how much water and sun the flowers need, and how to deadhead them to promote growth. They also discuss the benefits of using mulch to keep weeds at bay and retain moisture in the soil.
Next, Mark travels to a home where the homeowners are looking to complete a kitchen punch list. This includes fixing up the cabinets, adding a new backsplash, installing new pulls and knobs, and replacing the old fluorescent light fixture. Mark walks the homeowners through each step of the process, from removing the old backsplash and light fixture to painting the cabinets and installing the new hardware. He also provides tips and tricks along the way, such as using a leveler to ensure the backsplash is straight and using a drill bit guide to make accurate holes for the new hardware.
Throughout the episode, the team also provides helpful information on topics such as how to select the right type of mulch, how to remove old caulking, and how to determine the proper height for hanging a light fixture. As always, the Ask This Old House team is ready to help homeowners tackle their DIY projects with confidence and ease.
