Ginger and her friends Dodie and Macie join the school softball team. They're not very good at playing, but they're excited to be a part of the team. Ginger is especially excited to have a chance to spend more time with Darren, the team's hotshot pitcher.
However, things take a turn for the worse when a rival team accuses Darren of stealing signals. If true, this would mean that Darren has been cheating and giving his team an unfair advantage. The matter is taken to the school principal, and Darren is suspended from the team pending an investigation.
Ginger is crushed by the news. She believed in Darren, and she doesn't want to believe that he's a cheater. She and her friends try to figure out what really happened. They interview players from both teams and even recruit Blake, Ginger's little brother, to help spy on the rival team.
Their sleuthing leads them to a group of parents who have been watching the softball games and cheering on the rival team. The parents admit that they've been stealing the signals and relaying them to their team. Darren had no clue about the cheating, and after the truth comes out, the suspension is lifted.
Ginger is relieved that her friend isn't a cheater and that justice has been served. She's happy to be able to go back to playing softball with her friends. The experience also gives her a new appreciation for honesty and fair play. She learns that winning isn't everything, and that playing with integrity is more important than any trophy or accolade.
