Ep 1. Coming Home

In Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City season 1 episode 1, titled "Coming Home," we are introduced to Mary Ann Singleton, a naive young woman who has just moved to San Francisco in search of adventure and excitement. Mary Ann is staying with her friend Connie Bradshaw, who is a bit of a wild spirit and a free thinker.
As Mary Ann gets settled into her new digs, she quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city and all the unique characters that inhabit it. However, she also realizes that living on her own is not as easy as she thought it would be - she struggles to find a job and connect with people outside of Connie's circle of friends.
One day, Mary Ann stumbles upon 28 Barbary Lane, a quirky building that she soon learns is home to a group of eclectic, bohemian tenants. One of these tenants is Anna Madrigal, a kind and wise transgender woman who takes Mary Ann under her wing and helps her navigate life in the city.
Over the course of the episode, we also get to know some of the other tenants of 28 Barbary Lane, including Mona Ramsey, a free-spirited bisexual who is Anna's assistant, and Brian Hawkins, a hotshot reporter who has just come back from Vietnam.
As the episode progresses, Mary Ann's naivety begins to wear off as she experiences some of the darker aspects of the city. She witnesses a drug overdose and hears stories of police brutality against the LGBTQ+ community. However, Mary Ann remains optimistic and determined to make the most out of her new life in San Francisco.
Overall, "Coming Home" sets the stage for an intriguing and diverse cast of characters and promises to explore themes of love, acceptance, and finding one's place in the world.
