Part One: Submitted for Approval is the first episode of the classic horror anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark?. The show follows a group of teenagers, known as the Midnight Society, who gather around a campfire to tell frightening stories.
In this episode, we are introduced to the members of the Midnight Society. There's the enthusiastic and charismatic leader, Gary; the quiet and mysterious David; the tough and skeptical Frank; the artistic and quirky Kiki; the bookish and logical Betty Ann; and the new kid, Kristen.
Gary decides to initiate Kristen into the group by having her tell a story. She is hesitant at first, but eventually agrees. Kristen's story revolves around a young girl named Amanda who moves into a new house with her family. Amanda starts to hear strange noises coming from the walls of her bedroom, and she becomes convinced that there is a ghost lurking in the house.
Amanda's parents don't believe her, so she turns to her neighbor, Mrs. Levesque, for help. Mrs. Levesque gives Amanda a book on the history of the house, which reveals that a young girl named Melissa died in Amanda's room many years ago. Amanda realizes that Melissa's ghost is haunting the house and that she needs to find a way to put her to rest.
With the help of Mrs. Levesque, Amanda performs a ritual that is supposed to release Melissa's spirit. At first, it seems to work, but then Amanda starts hearing the ghostly noises again. She realizes that Mrs. Levesque had tricked her into performing a fake ritual and that Melissa's spirit is still trapped in the house.
The episode ends with the members of the Midnight Society discussing Kristen's story and agreeing that it was a good one. They then head off into the night as the camera zooms out on the campfire.
Part One: Submitted for Approval is a solid start to the Are You Afraid of the Dark? series. The episode sets up the premise of the show and introduces us to the main characters. The story itself is a classic haunted house tale, but with enough twists and turns to keep things interesting. Overall, it's a spooky and entertaining watch that is perfect for anyone who loves horror.
