In the sixth episode of the first season of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, titled "Balloonenstein," the trio of anthropomorphic fast food items -- Frylock, Meatwad, and Master Shake -- find themselves terrorized by a sentient balloon creature that Frylock had created as part of a science experiment. The creature, named Balloonenstein, has grown to gigantic proportions and has become increasingly violent, with a penchant for attacking Shake in particular.
As the episode begins, Frylock is shown working on a science project in his lab, which involves inflating a large balloon and then using electricity to bring it to life. The experiment seems to be going well at first, as Balloonenstein comes to life and begins to move around on its own. However, as Frylock explains, the creature has a "primitive mind," and its behavior becomes erratic and destructive. It quickly becomes clear that Balloonenstein is not merely a harmless balloon creature, but a powerful and dangerous force that must be stopped.
Despite Frylock's attempts to control Balloonenstein using a remote control device, the creature breaks free of his laboratory and begins wreaking havoc throughout the neighborhood. Shake, who has taken an instant dislike to Balloonenstein, begins to actively provoke the creature, leading to a series of violent confrontations. Meanwhile, Meatwad, ever the innocent bystander, simply tries to avoid getting caught up in the chaos.
In typical Aqua Teen Hunger Force fashion, the episode veers wildly between absurdist humor and moments of genuine tension. The trio's attempts to stop Balloonenstein involve a series of bizarre schemes, such as trying to sedate the creature with marijuana-infused brownies and attempting to trap it using a giant hamster wheel. In the end, however, it is Frylock's scientific expertise that manages to save the day, as he devises a solution to neutralize Balloonenstein's electrical charge and bring the creature back under his control.
The humor in "Balloonenstein" is typical of the show's offbeat, irreverent style, with jokes ranging from the absurd (such as Shake attempting to "seduce" the balloon creature with suggestive dance moves) to the crass (such as Meatwad's constant flatulence). At the same time, the episode also manages to explore themes of power and control, as well as the dangers of unchecked scientific experimentation. It's a strange and wacky episode, to be sure, but one that manages to deliver a satisfying mix of humor and unexpected darkness.
