In the third episode of the first season of Animorphs, Cassie and Rachel go on a mission to investigate the presence of a Yeerk pool that seems to be located in a rundown neighborhood of their town. The Yeerks are an alien race that have taken over the minds and bodies of humans, with the goal of eventually taking over the entire planet.
Cassie and Rachel decide to morph into cockroaches in order to enter the Yeerk pool undetected. Once inside, they are horrified to discover the massive number of humans who have been taken over by the Yeerks, and are now being controlled like puppets. Cassie and Rachel need to think fast in order to figure out how they can destroy the Yeerk pool without getting caught and losing their own freedom in the process.
As they explore the underground lair, Cassie and Rachel come across a group of human rebels who are also fighting against the Yeerk invasion. The rebels are led by a man named Walter, who has managed to evade the Yeerk's mind-control for years. He informs Cassie and Rachel that the Yeerks use the pool to infest the minds of willing human hosts, and that they are constantly on the lookout for new hosts to take over.
The rebels are skeptical of Cassie and Rachel at first, but are won over by the girls' bravery and determination to help their cause. Walter and his team teach the girls how to use a special type of fungus that can eat through the armor of the Yeerk's spaceship, and how to avoid the Yeerk patrols that are constantly combing the area for intruders.
As Cassie and Rachel begin their mission to destroy the Yeerk pool, they quickly realize that they are in over their heads. The Yeerk patrols are ruthless and efficient, and seem to know their every move. The girls manage to sneak past the patrols using a combination of cunning and stealth, but they are eventually caught by a group of Hork-Bajir - an alien race that the Yeerks have enslaved as their foot soldiers.
The Hork-Bajir seem to be unstoppable, and Cassie and Rachel are quickly overwhelmed. Just when it seems like all hope is lost, another member of the human resistance reveals himself - Jake, one of the other members of Cassie and Rachel's group who had been missing since they entered the Yeerk pool. Jake helps the girls defeat the Hork-Bajir, and they are finally able to make their way to the Yeerk pool.
Once there, the girls realize that destroying the Yeerk pool will not be as easy as they had thought. The pool is guarded by a powerful force field that prevents anything from getting through. Using their knowledge of biology and chemistry, Cassie and Rachel manage to create a bomb made out of the fungus that the rebels had given them. The bomb is able to get through the force field and destroy the Yeerk pool, thus freeing the minds of the humans who had been taken over by the Yeerks.
In the end, Cassie and Rachel are hailed as heroes by the human rebels and their friends. They realize that they have not only saved the lives of many innocent people, but have also made a significant contribution to the fight against the Yeerk invasion. The episode ends with the girls leaving the underground lair, grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the world.
