Ep 1. Baby Blue
- July 18, 2008
Animal Precinct is a television show where animal rescue officers investigate reports of animal abuse, neglect, and abandonment in the New York City area. In season 7 episode 1, entitled "Baby Blue," viewers follow the rescue team as they receive a call concerning a 1-year-old pit bull who was found alone in an empty apartment.
As the team arrives at the location, they are immediately struck by the pungent smell emanating from the apartment. The dog, whom they name Baby Blue, is malnourished and covered in fleas. The team realizes that Baby Blue must have been left alone for days without food or water. The team discovers dirty dishes and dog feces covering the floors, and they quickly determine that the owner who left Baby Blue in this condition must be held responsible.
The rescue team shifts gears from animal rescue to a criminal investigation, as they track down the owner who abandoned Baby Blue. They find that the owner, a young woman, is homeless and has been living in and out of shelters. She had no one to care for Baby Blue and could not bring him to shelters due to their no-pet policies. Despite this, the team helps the owner surrender Baby Blue with the hope of finding him a better home.
Meanwhile, Baby Blue is transferred to the Animal Care Centers of New York City, where veterinary teams assess his health. They find that Baby Blue had not only been neglected but also physically abused. Baby Blue has bruises and a fractured rib, indicating that the abuse occurred sometime before his abandonment. The veterinary team works on healing Baby Blue's wounds while also helping him gain weight.
The show then shifts focus to the legal investigation. The authorities charged the owner with animal cruelty and neglect, and she could face up to one year in jail if convicted. The prosecutor, who specializes in animal welfare cases, explains that taking care of pets also comes with the responsibility of providing basic needs such as food, water, and shelter. The prosecutor emphasizes that animal cruelty is a serious offense and that the law will hold those who abuse and neglect animals accountable.
Throughout the episode, Animal Precinct highlights the difficulties that come along with animal rescue, including the challenges of finding loving homes for abused and neglected animals. The show also emphasizes the importance of the rescue team's work in bringing those responsible for animal abuse and neglect to justice.
In the end, Baby Blue's condition improves significantly, and he gains the weight he needs to find his forever home. The Animal Care Centers of New York City find Baby Blue a loving family that will provide him with all the love and attention that he deserves. Animal Precinct's "Baby Blue" episode is not only heartwarming but also educational in that it shows how seriously authorities consider animal welfare cases.
