  • September 22, 2004

Blinded by Neglect is the third episode of Animal Precinct season four, a popular documentary series that follows the daily operations of the Special Investigative Services division of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

In this episode, the ASPCA's animal cruelty investigations team is called to rescue a dog that has been abandoned in a small apartment for days. The apartment has been left in a state of deplorable neglect, and the dog is found with a severe eye infection that has likely left her blind.

The team rushes the dog to the ASPCA's animal hospital for immediate treatment, where she is given emergency surgery to remove her infected eyes. The dog, now named Hope, is given around-the-clock care by the ASPCA staff, who work to nurse her back to health and help her adjust to life without eyesight.

As the investigation into Hope's abandonment and neglect continues, the ASPCA team discovers that her owners were a young couple who had recently moved out of the apartment, leaving their dog behind without any food, water, or medical care. After several weeks of neglect, Hope's eyes became so infected that she lost her vision, yet her owners made no attempt to seek help or medical attention for her.

The ASPCA team tracks down Hope's owners, who are now living in a nearby state. They are charged and prosecuted for animal cruelty, and Hope is placed into the ASPCA's adoption program. However, due to her medical condition, finding an adoptive family for the blind dog proves to be a difficult challenge.

Throughout the episode, Animal Precinct also highlights the daily challenges faced by the ASPCA's animal cruelty investigations team, who work tirelessly to protect the welfare of animals in New York City. It shows the compassion and dedication of the ASPCA staff who work with animals that have suffered unimaginable abuse and neglect. Each day, the team risks their own safety to rescue and bring justice to these innocent animals.

As the episode draws to a close, Hope is shown living happily in a loving home with her new family. Her remarkable resilience and hardiness serve as a symbol of hope for the countless animals who have fallen victim to neglect or abuse and the ASPCA's commitment to ensuring that justice is served.
