Volume I, Episode 8 of Angry Planet takes us to the diverse and lush landscapes of Costa Rica. Host, George Kourounis, travels through the Central American country in search of sprawling rainforests, active volcanoes, and exciting wildlife encounters.
The episode begins with Kourounis exploring Tortuguero National Park, which is known for its vast network of canals and lagoons. The canals here are home to a variety of aquatic creatures including crocodiles and caimans. Kourounis embarks on a boat tour to observe them from a safe distance.
Next, Kourounis travels to the Arenal Volcano, which last erupted in 1968. Arenal is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and Kourounis meets up with experts who monitor its activity. He learns about the potential dangers of living near a highly active volcano but also sees how the energy of the volcano can be harnessed to create geothermal power.
The episode takes a change of pace as Kourounis visits the Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo. The center is a sanctuary for a myriad of animals, but primarily rehabilitates jaguars, monkeys, and sloths. Kourounis assists with the feeding of baby sloths and has a chance to interact with the resident spider monkeys and macaws.
Continuing on with the wildlife theme, Kourounis travels to the Osa Peninsula, a biodiverse haven that is home to more than 2.5% of the world's total biodiversity. Here, Kourounis goes on a night hike through the dense jungle in search of nocturnal creatures like tarantulas, snakes, and owls.
The final stop of the episode is at Cahuita National Park, which is a protected stretch of coastline that runs for several kilometers. Kourounis visits with park rangers who patrol the beach to ensure that no one is disturbing the nesting sites of sea turtles.
Overall, this episode of Angry Planet showcases the beauty of Costa Rica's natural and wildlife-filled landscapes. However, it also highlights the importance of conservation and taking measures to protect these stunning environments.
