Andi Mack season 1 episode 4, titled "Dancing in the Dark," follows the adventures of Andi Mack, a 13-year-old girl who is finding her way through adolescence with the help of her family and friends.
In this episode, Andi and her friends Cyrus and Buffy attend their school's first school dance. Andi is excited about the prospect of attending her first dance, but she is apprehensive about asking her crush Jonah Beck to dance with her. Meanwhile, Cyrus is worried about dancing in front of everyone because he doesn't think he is a good dancer. Buffy doesn't want to go to the dance at all, but she decides to attend just to watch over her friends.
The episode begins with Andi trying on different outfits and asking her grandmother Bex for advice about what to wear to the dance. Bex, who is also Andi's mother (though Andi doesn't know this yet), tells her to wear whatever makes her feel comfortable. Andi ultimately decides to wear a yellow dress that her mother wore to her own first dance.
At the dance, Andi and her friends meet up and take some awkward photos together before heading onto the dance floor. Andi spots Jonah Beck and desperately wants to ask him to dance with her, but she can't seem to build up the courage to do so. Meanwhile, Cyrus is feeling self-conscious about his dancing and avoids getting on the dance floor. Buffy, on the other hand, tries to get into the spirit of things by dancing with one of her classmates, but she quickly becomes annoyed with his clumsiness.
As the night continues, Andi becomes increasingly frustrated with herself for not asking Jonah to dance. She thinks about some advice that her grandfather gave her about taking risks, and eventually gains the nerve to ask Jonah to dance. The two of them share a sweet moment on the dance floor, but it doesn't last long before Jonah is called away by one of his friends. Andi is left alone once again, but she is proud of herself for taking a chance.
Meanwhile, Cyrus still hasn't danced and is feeling even more embarrassed when he sees one of his classmates doing an impressive dance move. Buffy notices Cyrus' discomfort and tries to encourage him to dance, but he refuses. However, when Buffy goes to the restroom, Cyrus decides to go out onto the dance floor and let loose. He ends up impressing his classmates with his dance moves, and Buffy is proud of him when she returns from the restroom.
The episode ends with Andi, Cyrus, and Buffy hanging out in Andi's room, discussing the events of the dance. Andi is still thinking about Jonah, and Buffy and Cyrus encourage her to talk to him. Andi decides to send Jonah a message on a social media app, and ends up getting a response from him that makes her heart race.
Overall, "Dancing in the Dark" is a lighthearted, relatable episode that explores the awkwardness and excitement of attending a school dance for the first time. It highlights the importance of taking risks and stepping out of one's comfort zone, and shows how supportive friends can help each other grow and overcome insecurities.
