American Soul is an American biographical drama television series that premiered on BET on February 5, 2019. The series is set in the 1970s and follows the rise of Don Cornelius and his iconic music and dance show, Soul Train. The show is created by Jonathan Prince and Devon Greggory.

The main character of the show is Don Cornelius, played by Sinqua Walls. Cornelius is a struggling TV host in Chicago who is passionate about music and dance. He comes up with the idea to create a show that showcases the latest and hottest music and dance acts, and he calls it Soul Train.

Jason Dirden plays the role of Gerald Aims, one of the producers of Soul Train who is motivated by success and ambition. Gerald is also good friends with Don and tries to keep him grounded when he starts to spiral out of control.

Iantha Richardson plays the role of Tessa Lorraine, Cornelius's wife who is skeptical about his vision for Soul Train, but supports him nonetheless. Tessa becomes more involved in the show as it gains popularity and finds her own voice along the way.

Christopher Jefferson plays the role of the talented musician and Soul Train regular, Jesse Jackson. Jesse is a popular figure in the music scene and uses his platform to speak out against social injustices and discrimination.

Katlyn Nichol plays the role of Simone Clarke, a young and ambitious dancer who dreams of becoming a star on Soul Train. She forms a close friendship with Tessa and becomes a valuable member of the Soul Train family.

Jelani Winston plays the role of Kendall Clarke, Simone's younger brother who becomes involved in the Civil Rights Movement and plans to use Soul Train as a platform to raise awareness and promote equality.

Throughout the series, we see Don Cornelius and the Soul Train crew face various challenges and obstacles as they try to keep the show on the air and maintain their success. From keeping up with the latest music acts, to dealing with the pressures of fame and fortune, to navigating their personal relationships, the characters are constantly faced with tough decisions and must learn to adapt to the changing times.

The show also does a great job of highlighting the social and cultural issues of the time, such as racism, sexism, drugs, and politics. Whether it's showcasing the talents of African American artists or featuring diverse and inclusive dance performances, American Soul celebrates black culture and its impact on American history.

Overall, American Soul is an engaging and entertaining drama that will take you back to a time when music and dance were a form of expression and rebellion. The series has received critical acclaim for its engaging storylines, talented cast, and authentic portrayal of the era. With its toe-tapping soundtrack and heart-warming moments, American Soul is a must-watch for anyone who loves music, dance, and a good story.
