In the first episode of American Pickers season 1, titled Big Bear, the audience is introduced to Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz - two skilled "pickers" who travel across the United States in search of treasures hidden in the country's junk yards, barns, and basements.
The episode starts with a brief introduction of Mike and Frank, highlighting their expertise in picking old items and their passion for preserving the country's history through antiques. The duo sets out on an adventure to find hidden gems and make the best deals they can to make a profit.
Their destination for the debut episode is Big Bear, California, a small town tucked away in the mountains. The place is known for its beautiful scenery and unique locals. The first stop for Mike and Frank is a ranch property owned by a man named Phil. They are greeted by a pack of friendly German Shepherds who roam the grounds. Phil welcomes the pickers and gives them a tour of his property where they come across a 1928 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a World War II Jeep. Mike negotiates with Phil and strikes a deal to buy both the items.
The next stop for the pickers is a junkyard owned by Leland. He is known in Big Bear for his extensive collection of vintage car parts and antique memorabilia. Upon examining Leland's property, Mike and Frank come across a 1913 Indian motorcycle and an old fire truck. They make a deal with Leland and purchase the Indian motorcycle.
After picking the Indian motorcycle, Mike and Frank head to the home of Joe Deshone, an old friend and fellow picker. Joe guides the pair to an old hotel that is going to be demolished soon. After walking through the hotel, Mike and Frank come across an old carousel horse, a bull skull, and a neon beer sign. Joe also offers them a lead on a new potential pick: a 1940s Texas gas station.
The last pick of the episode takes place in a small liquor store owned by a man named Ernie. Mike and Frank were tipped off by Joe that Ernie has an extensive collection of old signs and advertisements. Upon arriving at the store, Mike and Frank are amazed by Ernie's collection. They make a deal with Ernie to buy a Coca-Cola sign.
The episode concludes with the duo packing up their van and heading out of Big Bear. They reflect on their journey and the treasures they found. It's also revealed that the Indian motorcycle is going to be sold to a collector who is willing to pay top dollar for it.
Overall, American Pickers season 1 episode 1 offers an exciting introduction to the world of picking. The episode showcases the vast array of items that can be found in different parts of the country and the negotiations required to obtain them.
