In American Gothic season 1 episode 3, titled "Nighthawks," the Hawthorne family continues to deal with the aftermath of the discovery that their deceased patriarch may have been a notorious serial killer. As tensions rise within the family, they must also contend with the arrival of a new suspect who may have information about the murders that occurred decades ago.
The episode focuses on Cam (Justin Chatwin), one of the Hawthorne siblings who is struggling with his own demons as he attempts to navigate his newfound role as the family's protector. When a man named Gunther (Daniel Arnold) shows up at the family's art gallery claiming to have information about the Silver Bells Killer, the serial killer who terrorized Boston in the 90s and who may have been responsible for the deaths of several people connected to the Hawthornes, Cam is suspicious.
As Gunther's story seems to hold up under questioning from the FBI, Cam begins to worry that the man may actually be the killer himself. Meanwhile, the rest of the family grapples with their own problems. Matriarch Madeline (Virginia Madsen) continues to struggle with her own role in the family's past, while her daughter Tessa (Megan Ketch) begins to feel as if she's being overshadowed by her siblings.
Elsewhere, Alison (Juliet Rylance), the wife of the eldest Hawthorne sibling, is visited by a former lover who threatens to expose a secret that could destroy her marriage. As the family's secrets begin to unravel, they must all come to terms with the fact that they may not know each other as well as they thought.
Overall, "Nighthawks" is a tense and suspenseful episode that continues to build on the mystery and intrigue of the show. With strong performances from the cast and plenty of twists and turns, American Gothic keeps viewers guessing until the very end.
