In the 19th episode of the second season of American Dad, titled "Joint Custody," Stan and Francine decide to have a second child after realizing that they missed having a baby around the house. However, after Francine gives birth to baby girl, the couple realizes that they are not quite ready for the responsibilities of parenting another child.
Meanwhile, Roger the alien takes on the role of a foster parent to a young boy named Marcus, who is grappling with the pain of his parents' divorce. As Roger bonds with Marcus, he struggles with the idea of letting him go back to his parents when their divorce is finalized.
When Stan and Francine decide to split the parenting duties evenly between themselves and Roger, chaos ensues as Roger proves to be an unorthodox caregiver. However, as the couple navigates their new life as parents of two, they begin to appreciate Roger's unique approach to childcare.
As Marcus' parents' divorce comes to a close, Roger is faced with a difficult decision in determining whether or not to give up Marcus. In the end, the family comes together to make the right choice for everyone involved.
Filled with the show's trademark humor and heart, "Joint Custody" explores the challenges and rewards of parenthood, whether it be through natural birth, adoption, or in Roger's case, intergalactic fostering.
