Stan Smith is an eccentric and conservative CIA agent and a family man who enjoys overpowering his wife, Francine, and their two children, Steve and Hayley. However, his life changes when Roger, an alien that Stan rescued from Area 51, moves in with the Smiths. In the 14th episode of the 20th season, titled "An Irish Goodbye", Stan takes a trip to Ireland with Steve. Francine is heartbroken by the thought of them leaving, but Roger convinces her that she needs some time to herself and that they should throw a house party.
Meanwhile, Steve is excited about going on an adventure with his dad and sits vigilantly on the plane while Stan is trying to drink away his fears. Steve wants to start a father and son business that involves whiskey-making which they see as a perfect fit since they're going to the home of this famous spirit. However, things don't go as planned when they find out that they'll have to pitch their whiskey recipe to the owners of one of the oldest distilleries in Ireland.
During their presentation, the duo realizes that their whiskey is nowhere near as good as they had hoped. Out of desperation, they begin to throw a fit, causing the traditional Irish owners and locals to get increasingly offended. Steve is horrified that his father has once again let his ego get the best of him. However, they eventually come up with a plan to save face, and everything works out okay in the end.
Back in the States, Francine is getting drunk and feeling her oats at the house party. Roger has also invited Jeff's new girlfriend, who believes the party to be a fun adventure but soon finds out she is struggling to keep up with the party’s tone. Soon, things start to spiral out of control when a group of rowdy young people comes in and starts trashing the house.
Francine suddenly becomes the mature person in the party after a severe mishap is signaled. She starts to take charge of the situation, but things manage to get worse before they get better - everything escalates, and the house is destroyed. When the party is over, Roger, Francine, and Jeff have one of their saddest conversations yet as they reflect on the situation and what it means for them.
The episode is an interesting modern take on the traditional Irish colonial whiskey-making industry. It shows the lengths that people are willing to go to for their dreams and shows the humorous side of being away from home and dealing with a different culture. Meanwhile, back in the states, the episode captured the feeling of a party that got out of hand, a situation that is all too believable and relatable. It’s a unique take on these issues and manages to deliver it with the usual American Dad! flair of humor and absurdity that we have all come to love.
