  • October 8, 2019

In this episode of America Says, two teams go head-to-head in a battle of wits to see who can guess the most popular answers to survey questions given to 100 Americans. The first team, Publishing House, is made up of book enthusiasts who love to read and write. The team members include a writer, an editor, a literary agent, and a librarian. Their opponents, the Volleyball Squad, are a group of energetic athletes who play for a local recreational league. The team includes two volleyball coaches, a player, and a referee.

The game begins with host John Michael Higgins introducing the two teams and explaining the rules of the game. Each team will have a chance to answer five survey questions, and they will earn points based on how many of the top answers they can correctly guess. The team with the most points at the end of the game will advance to the bonus round, where they can win up to $15,000.

The first round begins with a question about things you would see in a movie theater. Both teams come up with some predictable answers, like popcorn, soda, and movie trailers. But the Publishing House team takes an early lead by guessing some less obvious answers, including previews and credits. The Volleyball Squad is not far behind, guessing answers like a ticket booth and movie posters. In the end, the Publishing House wins the round with a total of 450 points, compared to the Volleyball Squad's 350 points.

The second round is all about types of bars. The Publishing House team is quick to guess answers like sports bars, dive bars, and wine bars. The Volleyball Squad struggles at first, but makes a comeback by guessing some more creative answers, such as juice bar and salad bar. However, in the end, the Publishing House wins again, with a total of 500 points, compared to the Volleyball Squad's 450 points.

By the third round, the Volleyball Squad is determined to make a comeback. This round is about things you might find buried in your backyard. Both teams come up with some bizarre answers, like a dragon egg and a pirate treasure. However, the Publishing House team ultimately wins the round with some more practical answers, including tree roots and seashells. The Volleyball Squad ends the round with 350 points, while the Publishing House leads with 650 points.

In the fourth round, the Volleyball Squad is determined to catch up to the Publishing House. The question is about things you might see in a supermarket. The Publishing House seems to struggle at first, but comes up with some strong answers, including shopping carts, cash registers, and self-checkout machines. The Volleyball Squad is quick to guess answers like produce and a deli counter. In the end, the round is a tie, with both teams earning a total of 500 points.

The final round is a chance for the Volleyball Squad to take the lead and win the game. This round is about things you might associate with UFOs. The Publishing House team starts off strong, guessing some obvious answers, including aliens and flying saucers. The Volleyball Squad tries to come up with some creative answers, like crop circles and Area 51. However, the round ends in a tie, with both teams earning a total of 450 points.

With both teams tied, it's time for the bonus round. The team that can guess the top three answers to a single question will win $15,000. The question is about things you might buy online. The Publishing House team goes first and guesses some strong answers, including clothes and books. However, they fail to guess the top three answers, which were electronics, home goods, and appliances. The Volleyball Squad gets their chance and quickly guesses electronics as the top answer. After some hesitation, they also guess appliances and home goods, winning the game and $15,000.

In the end, it was a close game, but the Volleyball Squad was able to come from behind and win. The publishing house team put up a good fight, but ultimately fell just short. Regardless, it was a fun and entertaining episode of America Says, showcasing the diverse interests and knowledge of the contestants.
