Having recently become a mother, Von finds herself struggling to adjust to life as a working mother. At the same time, she struggles to deal with a particularly difficult patient, a young woman named Jacklyn who is suffering from a rare form of cancer. Jacklyn is a fierce and independent woman who is determined to fight her illness on her own terms. Despite Von's best efforts, Jacklyn proves resistant to treatment, and as her condition worsens, Von is forced to confront her own fears of mortality and the limitations of modern medicine.
Elsewhere in the hospital, Charlotte finds herself embroiled in a difficult case involving a young girl who is suffering from multiple injuries as a result of a car accident. As she tries to help the girl and her family come to terms with their injuries, Charlotte is forced to confront her own feelings of guilt and regret over past mistakes. Meanwhile, Terri struggles to deal with her own personal demons as she helps a young boy come to terms with the death of his brother.
As the episode progresses, each of the characters is forced to confront their own fears and insecurities, and to question the limitations and possibilities of medicine in the face of the harsh realities of life. With its mix of emotional drama and medical intrigue, "Reality Bites" is a powerful and thought-provoking episode that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
