When a young woman named Mildred Barnes (Jeanette Nolan) arrives in town and takes a job at a bookstore, she quickly catches the eye of a wealthy businessman named Harry Wheeler (Herbert Marshall). Harry is married, but he can't resist Mildred's allure and soon begins an affair with her.
As the relationship progresses, Mildred becomes increasingly desperate for Harry to leave his wife and marry her. Harry, however, is hesitant to make such a drastic move and suggests they continue their affair in secret.
One day, Mildred receives a mysterious phone call from a woman who claims to be Harry's wife. The woman tells Mildred that Harry has lied to her about their relationship and that he's not the wealthy man he claims to be. Instead, he's a con artist who has tricked numerous women into giving him money.
Mildred is shocked and heartbroken by this news but decides to go along with Harry's plan to continue their affair. She hopes that if she can gather evidence of Harry's deceit, she'll be able to turn the tables on him and gain the upper hand.
As Mildred sets her plan in motion, she finds herself caught in a web of lies and deceit. She quickly realizes that nothing is as it seems, and that she may be in over her head.
In the end, Mildred must use all of her cunning and intelligence to outsmart Harry and his wife and save herself from a disastrous fate.
