On this episode of AIR DISASTERS, Season 3 Episode 6, entitled Break Up Over Texas, viewers are taken back to May 11th, 1996, to witness the events leading up to one of America's deadliest aviation disasters. At the time, ValuJet Flight 592 was en route from Miami to Atlanta when, just minutes after takeoff, it plunged into the Florida Everglades. All 110 passengers and crew members aboard perished in the crash.

The episode begins by examining the various mechanical and technical issues that plagued the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 aircraft prior to its final flight. The plane was old and had been pieced together from parts scavenged from other aircraft, leading to concerns about its safety and airworthiness. Several important safety mechanisms were also missing or inoperable, including the ability to effectively combat fires in the cargo hold. Despite these red flags, the flight was cleared for takeoff without issue.

Viewers are then introduced to the individuals on board the doomed flight and their stories. Included among the passengers were a group of sixty student musicians from the University of Georgia, who were planning to perform at a theme park in Orlando. Among the crew members were several experienced pilots and flight attendants, each with their own family and loved ones waiting for them back home.

As the aircraft gains altitude and heads towards its destination, things begin to go wrong. Smoke is detected in the cabin, and passengers report seeing flames near the back of the plane. Panic sets in as the crew tries to determine the source of the fire and take appropriate action. However, their efforts are quickly overwhelmed as the fire spreads throughout the aircraft and the pilot loses control.

The episode does an excellent job of using archival footage and expert testimony to recreate the events of that tragic day. We see how the plane began to break apart mid-flight, with debris raining down into the swamp below. Rescue and recovery efforts were slow due to the remote location and treacherous terrain, and it took weeks to locate and retrieve all of the remains.

Ultimately, investigations would reveal a number of factors that contributed to the crash. These included the poor maintenance and safety practices of ValuJet as a company, as well as the lax regulations and oversight of the aviation industry as a whole. The episode concludes by examining the aftermath of the crash, including the memorials and tributes paid to the victims and the changes that were made in the wake of the tragedy to ensure that such a disaster never happened again.

In summary, AIR DISASTERS Season 3 Episode 6, Break Up Over Texas is a poignant and gripping look at one of the deadliest aviation disasters in American history. Through expert interviews, archival footage, and personal stories, viewers are taken on a journey that shines a light on the importance of safety and oversight in the aviation industry. Despite the tragic subject matter, the episode does an excellent job of honoring the memory of those lost and highlighting the efforts of those who worked to make the skies safer for everyone.
