Tony, a newspaper journalist living in England, has recently lost his wife Lisa to cancer. Despite her death, Tony continues to communicate with Lisa through his daily conversations with her via recordings on his phone. However, this connection does not bring him any comfort or closure, as Tony is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his soulmate.
As Tony tries to navigate through life after Lisa, he finds it difficult to find any joy in the mundane tasks of work, socializing, or even taking care of his dog, and he falls deeper into depression. Amidst all this, Tony decides to visit a psychics' meetup with his co-worker to see if he can find any closure and connect with his wife beyond the grave.
At the meetup, Tony meets a woman named June, who claims to be a psychic. June seems to have a genuine gift, as she is able to understand the loss Tony is going through, and she tells him that Lisa is still with him and that he should continue to talk to her.
However, Tony remains skeptical of June's abilities, and as he leaves the meetup, he encounters a young boy named Karl who is being bullied by older children. Tony intervenes and stands up for Karl, and in doing so, he gains a newfound sense of purpose and joy in his life.
As the episode progresses, Tony finds himself having to navigate through the different stages of grief, including anger, bargaining, and depression. He continues to struggle with the loss of his soulmate, and the idea that his life may never be complete without her.
One day, Tony's neighbor Anne visits him and tells him about a stray dog that has been hanging around the neighborhood. Tony immediately feels a connection to the dog and decides to take him in. The dog, who Tony names Brandy, becomes a source of comfort and love in Tony's life, and he begins to realize that there may be more to life than just his own grief.
As the episode comes to a close, Tony comes across a video of himself and Lisa dancing at their wedding. Watching the video brings Tony to tears, but it also reminds him of the love that he shared with Lisa and the happy memories they have together. Tony begins to see that even though Lisa may be gone, their love still lives on in his heart, and he gains a new perspective on his life moving forward.
Overall, the first episode of Afterlife is a poignant and emotional look at one man's journey through grief and loss. Despite the heavy subject matter, the episode manages to find moments of joy and hope, reminding the audience that even in the darkest of times, there is still light to be found.
