Adventures From the Book of Virtues is a children's animated television show that is based on the book of stories written by William J. Bennett. The show teaches children about important values and virtues through entertaining stories and characters. In season 1 episode 31, titled "Selflessness - The Line of Golden Light / Saint George and the Dragon," viewers are presented with two stories that highlight the importance of selflessness and sacrifice.
The first story, "The Line of Golden Light," tells the tale of an angel named Michael who is tasked with painting a line of golden light across the sky. As he works, he notices a woman in distress who needs help, but he decides he cannot be bothered as he needs to complete his task. The woman eventually dies, and Michael is consumed by guilt. He seeks out the help of his friend, Plato, who teaches him about the power of selflessness. Michael then sets out to make amends by painting a golden line from the woman's gravesite up to heaven, in honor of her selfless sacrifice.
The second story, "Saint George and the Dragon," is a classic tale of heroism and selflessness. Saint George, a brave knight, is tasked with slaying a terrifying dragon that is terrorizing a kingdom. Though he is initially afraid and unsure of how to proceed, George chooses to put his own safety aside and fight for the greater good. Through bravery, wit, and selflessness, George is able to defeat the dragon and save the kingdom.
Both stories carry powerful messages of the importance of selflessness and sacrifice. The characters demonstrate that it is only through putting aside our own desires and focusing on the needs of others that we can truly achieve greatness. The episode offers children an entertaining and engaging way to learn about these important virtues and encourages them to consider how they can demonstrate selflessness in their own lives.
