In Adventure Time season 7 episode 7, "Everything Stays," viewers are taken on a journey back in time to see how Marceline the Vampire Queen became one of the last remaining creatures to live in the post-apocalyptic world of Ooo. As Marceline spends time with Bubblegum Princess, she becomes filled with a fierce longing to know more about her past. The episode explores the relationship between Marceline and her mother, who abandoned her as a child.
The episode opens with Marceline and Bubblegum Princess making their way through a redwood forest. The two are collecting bottles of maple syrup from trees and are having a conversation about Ooo's history. As Marceline and Bubblegum Princess cross a stream, Marceline notices a cemetery and abandons Bubblegum Princess to investigate. While wandering through the tombstones, Marceline is suddenly transported back to a memory of her as a child. She is sitting on her mother's lap as they sing a sweet lullaby entitled "Everything Stays."
As Marceline steps out of her memory, she realizes that this tune has been stuck in her head for years. In order to understand the significance of the lullaby, Marceline constructs a machine that will transport her back in time to her childhood home. As Marceline and Bubblegum Princess continue to collect maple syrup in a new location, Marceline activates her time machine.
Once Marceline is transported through time, viewers get a glimpse into her childhood and her relationship with her mother. We see how Marceline's mother, Elise, leaves her to fend for herself in the apocalypse. Elise is later seen returning but is now a powerful vampire. The two have an emotional reunion during which they sing "Everything Stays" together.
As Marceline and her mother sing their lullaby, we learn that it has a deep and powerful meaning to both of them. The song is a representation of the bond between mother and child, and the message that memories can never be lost or taken away. This includes memories of love, warmth, and comfort, even in times of chaos and uncertainty.
As the episode progresses, Marceline learns that her mother has taken on a new identity, and has abandoned the family once again. She is filled with guilt and sadness about her mother's departure and grapples with the feeling of abandonment. However, after a conversation with Bubblegum Princess, Marceline is reminded that her mother never stopped loving her. She decides to move on from the pain of abandonment and instead focus on the happy memories she has of her mother.
Throughout the episode, viewers are given a glimpse into Marceline the Vampire Queen's past and the events that led up to her being one of the few remaining creatures in Ooo. But more than that, the episode highlights the importance of memories, love, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child.
