Frost & Fire is the 30th episode of the fifth season of the highly acclaimed animated series, Adventure Time. This episode is a follow up to the previous episode, "Sky Witch" where Princess Bubblegum retrieved her amulet – an item with significant importance – from Marceline's ex-girlfriend, Ash.
In the beginning, Flame Princess and Princess Bubblegum engage in an epic battle that leads to a huge explosion, which caused Finn to be knocked out. After he wakes up and realizes that Flame Princess and Princess Bubblegum had a heated argument, he starts to investigate what happened. He finds Flame Princess confused, hurt and upset by what had happened. He really wants Flame Princess to talk to Princess Bubblegum about their issues, but she refuses. This worries Finn because he knows that the two of them should be on good terms.
As Finn tries to reconcile their differences, Flame Princess becomes noticeably more hostile towards him, and they get into an argument about him being friends with Princess Bubblegum. Finn tries to defend his friendship with Princess Bubblegum but Flame Princess doesn't understand why he is talking to her enemy. Finn takes that moment to reveal to Flame Princess how he has always considered Princess Bubblegum to be like family. This irritated Flame Princess, and she suddenly loses her temper, causing her to transform from her regular shape into her full blazing form.
Finn thinks that the best way to calm her down would be to talk about their relationship and how he feels about her. However, as he does this, Flame Princess misinterprets what he is trying to say and thinks Finn is breaking up with her. Her reaction to this causes Finn to get hurt, and in an act of anger, he blows out Flame Princess's flames.
This act introduces the main theme of this episode – the conflict between the seasons of fire and ice. The resulting catastrophic event leads Finn to be more determined to fix his relationship with Flame Princess. He is unaware that his actions had caused damage to Flame Princess on a deeper level. On the other hand, Ice King is delighted that this incident has caused a rift between Finn and Flame Princess, which he takes advantage of in a bid to win over Flame Princess's love.
The episode takes Finn, Jake and Ice King through an adventurous journey to the Ice Kingdom's core. The trio must traverse through treacherous terrains such as the Crystal Dimension, falling ice cliffs and raspberry lakes. The journey brings them to the Ice King's childhood home at the base of the Ice Kingdom. Here, they encounter the Ice King's former love, who is now nothing more than a skeletal husk.
The journey to the Ice King's homeland emphasizes the episode's theme, the contrast between the fiery and cold seasons of Ooo. The ice kingdom was once full of warmth, joy, and love, something that the Ice King yearns for in his current state.
As the journey progresses, it dawns on Finn that he's made a grave mistake and hurt Flame Princess to a degree he had not comprehended. He realizes that he is the only one who can fix it, and more his concern should be Flame Princess's welfare instead of his own feelings.
The main action of the episode pits Flame Princess against Ice King in an epic battle. The episode's ending is thought-provoking and unexpected, leaving fans with more questions than answers.
