Finn is a young boy who lives in a post-apocalyptic, candy-filled world. He is accompanied on his adventures by his best friend and adoptive brother, Jake, a magical dog with the ability to stretch and shape-shift. In season 5 episode 16, titled "Puhoy," Finn falls asleep during a pillow fight with Jake and wakes up in a dream world called the Pillow World.
In this world, Finn is a middle-aged man named Shermy living in a house made entirely out of pillows. He lives with his wife, Beth, and their children, Bronwyn and Flo. Shermy quickly realizes that he has a lifetime of memories in this dream world and decides to embrace his new life.
Shermy goes to work at a pillow factory and develops friendships with his coworkers. He also becomes a well-known musician and plays a concert for his entire town. Throughout Shermy's life in Pillow World, there are hints of his past life as Finn in the real world, including a lost love interest named Bubblegum.
As Shermy grows old, he begins to question the reality of his world and wonders if he is truly happy. He seeks advice from his daughter, Bronwyn, who encourages him to explore new things and find happiness in the present moment. Shermy then sets out on an adventure to find Bubblegum.
Throughout the episode, there are several fantastical and surreal elements, including giant dragonflies and swimming in a lake made of pillows. Despite these elements, the episode centers on the theme of the human experience and the search for true happiness.
In the end, Shermy realizes that he cannot find happiness by dwelling on the past and decides to fully embrace his life in the Pillow World. He says goodbye to his family and wakes up in the real world, where he's greeted by Jake, who is eager to hear about his dream.
"Puhoy" is a standout episode of Adventure Time for its exploration of complex themes through elaborate storytelling and fantastic visuals. It's a testament to the show's ability to be both entertaining and thought-provoking, making it a favorite amongst fans of all ages.
