Adam-12 was a police procedural drama that aired from 1968 to 1975. Set in Los Angeles, the show followed officers of the Los Angeles Police Department as they patrolled the streets, responding to a variety of calls and incidents. Season 5 episode 6, entitled Badge Heavy, focuses on Officers Pete Malloy and Jim Reed as they encounter a variety of challenges during their patrol.
The episode begins with Malloy and Reed responding to a call about a disturbance at a local bar. When they arrive, they find two men arguing over a game of darts. The officers attempt to calm the men down, but one of them becomes belligerent and starts to get physical with the other. Malloy and Reed are forced to intervene and manage to break up the fight without anyone getting seriously hurt.
After dealing with the bar disturbance, Malloy and Reed are called to a nearby home where a woman has reported a break-in. When they arrive, they find that the home has been ransacked and several valuable items are missing. The woman is visibly upset and tells the officers that she's afraid to stay in her own home. Malloy and Reed spend some time looking for evidence and speaking with neighbors, but they don't turn up any leads.
Later in their shift, Malloy and Reed are driving through a residential area when they spot a car driving erratically. They follow the car and eventually pull it over. The driver appears to be under the influence of drugs and is clearly agitated. Malloy and Reed take him into custody and find a small amount of narcotics in the car.
As the night progresses, Malloy and Reed encounter several more incidents, including a woman who has been beaten by her boyfriend, a man with a stolen car and a group of teenagers who have been causing a disturbance in a park. Through it all, the officers remain calm, professional and determined to do their jobs to the best of their ability.
The title of the episode, Badge Heavy, refers to a situation where an officer becomes too aggressive or arrogant in their approach to enforcing the law. During the course of the episode, Malloy and Reed encounter several officers who display this behavior, including one who is harassing a group of young men for no apparent reason and another who is unnecessarily rough when taking a suspect into custody.
Overall, Badge Heavy is a typical episode of Adam-12, featuring a mix of drama, action and character development. The show was praised for its realistic portrayal of police work and the personal lives of officers. Despite being set in the late 1960s and early 1970s, many of the issues raised in the show are still relevant today, including drug abuse, domestic violence and social unrest.
