Jim and Cheryl's youngest daughter, Gracie, is excited about her upcoming father-daughter dance at school. Jim, on the other hand, is less than thrilled about the event, as he despises the idea of dancing in any form. Cheryl tries to convince him to suck it up and go for Gracie's sake, but Jim remains resistant.
Meanwhile, Andy is struggling with his own father-daughter issues. His daughter, Ruby, is growing up too fast and he is having a hard time accepting that she is no longer his little girl. His overprotective nature is causing friction between him and his wife, who thinks he needs to let Ruby spread her wings.
As they prepare for the dance, tensions rise between Jim and Cheryl when he accuses her of being too controlling. She counters that he is too stubborn and the two fight, leading Jim to make the bold decision not to attend the dance at all.
At the dance, Gracie is heartbroken when her father is a no-show, and Cheryl tries to make it up to her by dancing with her. Meanwhile, Andy struggles to let go as Ruby dances with a boy and is confronted with some uncomfortable truths about his own relationship with his daughter.
In the end, Jim realizes that he was being selfish and shows up to the dance, apologizing to Gracie and dancing with her. Andy also learns to let go a little and allows Ruby to dance with her friends, coming to terms with the fact that she is growing up.
The episode ends with Jim and Cheryl making amends and reflecting on the importance of letting go as their children grow up before their eyes.
