Ep 20. Spelling Bee

Jim is back with another hilarious mishap in "According To Jim" season 4 episode 20 titled "Spelling Bee".

The episode kicks off with Jim and Cheryl competing in a PTA meeting, vying for the position of chairperson for the annual spelling bee competition. While Cheryl has experience organizing and executing events, Jim confident that he can make the event more entertaining for the parents and families participating. The two finally agree that they will co-chair the event, but tensions boil, and Jim's ego gets the best of him as he belittles Cheryl during the planning stages of the spelling bee.

Meanwhile, Jim's brother in-law Andy asks for his help in preparing his son Kyle for the spelling bee. Andy is surprised when Kyle can spell big and difficult words with ease, but he soon realizes that Kyle can only spell obscure words that he's interested in, like dinosaurs and planets. Jim begins coaching Kyle but quickly realizes that the seemingly easy way out isn't going to work for him. Kyle's apathy and lack of interest in mundane words make it nearly impossible for him to win the spelling bee.

As the day of the spelling bee approaches, Jim's plans for a more "entertaining" event come to fruition, making Cheryl more and more anxious. Her main concern, however, is getting Kyle to participate and spell correctly. Jim and Andy concoct a plan to make spelling fun for Kyle by incorporating his interests into the competition - a quiz show style portion of the event. Kyle navigates successfully through the first round, spelling words like "stegosaurus" and "Uranus" that he's passionate about.

Cheryl's worries are put to bed when Kyle makes it to the final round of the competition. Nervousness sets in for Kyle as he prepares to spell a word that he hasn't studied, and Jim comes through to coach Kyle in the way that he needed all along - teaching him the proper way to sound out words and apply the spelling rules he was taught in school.

The climax of "According To Jim" season 4 episode 20 approaches the end, with Kyle spelling the final word with ease, clutching the title of spelling bee champion! Jim and Cheryl come to a mutual understanding that though they might have different approaches to organizing events, they realize that working together is what makes them a great team.
