Jim is a lovable and well-meaning yet slightly obnoxious family man in his 40s who often finds himself in amusing situations. In the pilot episode, Jim and his wife Cheryl are preparing for their youngest daughter's first day of kindergarten. However, Jim is more focused on his upcoming fantasy football draft and is consequently unprepared for their daughter's big day.
Meanwhile, Cheryl is feeling overwhelmed with running the household and wishes Jim would take on more responsibilities. When Jim's sister-in-law Dana comes over and suggests that Jim take care of their children for the day, Cheryl sees it as the perfect opportunity for Jim to prove that he can handle more than just football.
Jim's day with the kids starts off rocky as he struggles to juggle their needs and demands. He takes them to a car wash, where chaos ensues as the kids play with the buttons and switches in the car. Jim also takes them to a fast food restaurant, where he embarrasses himself in front of an attractive woman.
Back at the house, Jim has trouble getting the kids to nap, and they end up getting into a mess while he's distracted. Cheryl comes home to find the house in disarray and Jim exhausted. However, she is surprised and touched to see that Jim has put a lot of effort into making their daughter's first day of school special, including creating a special breakfast and lunch for her.
While Jim's antics may be frustrating at times, he ultimately comes through for his family in his own unique way. Cheryl recognizes this and learns to appreciate Jim's quirks and efforts.
Overall, the pilot episode of According to Jim sets the stage for the show's central themes of family, love, humor, and the occasional mishap. It introduces viewers to the show's eccentric yet relatable characters and establishes Jim's role as a lovable yet flawed family man.
