Acapulco is a new television series that premiered on Apple TV+ in 2021. The show is set in the 1980s and follows the story of a young guy named Flavio Caballero, who is struggling to find his place in the world. Flavio (Enrique Arrizon) is a high school drop-out working as a pool boy in Acapulco's most exclusive hotel and dreaming of a better life.
Flavio's life takes a turn when the hotel's owner, Hugo (Rafael Cebrian), sees potential in the young man and offers him a job as a tennis instructor to the wealthy guests. Flavio sees this as an opportunity to make something of himself and eagerly accepts the job. While on the job, Flavio meets Alex (Vanessa Bauche), the hotel's head of housekeeping who takes Flavio under her wing and helps him navigate the world of Acapulco's elite.
As Flavio begins to find his footing in his new job, he discovers that the hotel is a hotbed of secrets and scandals. Hugo, the hotel owner, is having an affair with one of the guests, Susan (Mar Celinni), and is constantly trying to do everything in his power to keep this relationship a secret. Meanwhile, Alex is hiding her own secrets, including a son from a previous marriage, whom she keeps hidden from the other hotel staff.
The show has a comedic tone and utilizes the breezy, sun-kissed backdrop of Acapulco as a character in its own right. The show strikes a great balance between the drama and the comedy and keeps the audience hooked with its witty writing and unpredictable plot twists.
One of the standout aspects of the show is its ability to transport the audience to the 1980s. The show does a great job at capturing the fashion, music, and overall vibe of the decade. The show's soundtrack features several iconic '80s hits that help elevate the show's narrative.
Another aspect of the show that stands out is its ability to showcase the diversity of Mexican culture. The show features a predominantly Latino cast, and it doesn't shy away from highlighting the nuances and uniqueness of their culture. The show's use of Spanish dialogue also adds to the authenticity and adds another layer to the show's layers.
Enrique Arrizon shines as Flavio Caballero, the show's protagonist, and brings an infectious charm to the character. He is incredibly likable and brings a sense of sincerity to the character that makes it easy for the audience to root for him.
The supporting cast is equally impressive, with Vanessa Bauche and Rafael Cebrian both standing out with their performances. Bauche's Alex is a strong and admirable character who helps ground Flavio and guides him through some of the more challenging situations he encounters. Cebrian's Hugo is a complex character who is constantly teetering on the edge of being both lovable and unlikable.
Overall, Acapulco is an enjoyable and entertaining TV show that is well worth a watch. The show's balance of comedy and drama, authentic setting, and likable characters make it a must-watch for anyone looking for something lighthearted and fun. The show's use of the '80s aesthetic and diverse cast only add to the show's charm and uniqueness.
