Absentia is a thriller drama series produced by Amazon Studios, which originally premiered in the United States in 2017. Starring Stana Katic (known for her role as Kate Beckett in Castle) in the lead role, the show follows the story of FBI agent Emily Byrne, who disappeared while on a mission and was declared dead in absentia. Six years later, Byrne is found in a cabin in the woods, barely alive and with no memory of what happened to her during those missing years.

The series opens with a mysterious man stalking the city of Boston and committing gruesome murders. We learn that this is Nick Durand, Emily's husband, who is secretly carrying out these killings while trying to find a way to bring her back. When Emily reappears out of the blue, she finds herself implicated in the murders he committed and is subsequently arrested, facing charges for crimes she didn't commit.

As Emily adjusts to life after the incident, she struggles to rebuild relationships with her family members, especially with her son Flynn, who no longer recognizes her. The show also delves into Emily's backstory and the events leading up to her disappearance. We learn about her troubled marriage to Nick and her relationship with fellow agent Tommy Gibbs, who becomes her closest confidante during her time in the FBI.

In addition to the main story thread, Absentia also features several subplots that add depth and complexity to the narrative. We see the relationship between Tommy and Emily intensify as they work together to solve the murders and clear Emily's name. Meanwhile, Nick's relationship with Alice, a widow who lost her husband during the attacks on 9/11, gradually becomes more intense as he struggles to come to terms with his guilt over Emily's disappearance.

The show features a stellar cast that brings the characters to life in a nuanced and emotionally charged manner. Stana Katic delivers a powerful performance as Emily Byrne, capturing the character's vulnerability and strength in equal measure. Patrick Heusinger is equally impressive as Nick Durand, capturing the cruel intensity of his character.

Aside from the standout performances, Absentia is also notable for its unique visual style. The cinematography is top-notch, using the dark and gritty streets of Boston to great effect. The visuals are stark and atmospheric, helping to create a sense of unease and tension that pervades throughout the show.

Overall, Absentia is a gripping thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. With a talented cast, strong writing, and stunning visual design, it tells a complex story that will keep you guessing until the very end. Whether you're a fan of crime dramas or character-driven narratives, this show is sure to captivate you.

Absentia is a series that ran for 3 seasons (30 episodes) between September 25, 2017 and on Amazon
