The show stars Glenn Howerton as Jack Griffin, a Harvard philosophy professor who loses his job and is forced to return to his hometown of Toledo, Ohio, where he takes a job as a high school Advanced Placement (AP) biology teacher.

The show is set in Whitlock High School, where Jack is assigned to teach a class of students who are determined to excel despite his lack of interest in actually teaching them. Instead, Jack uses his classroom as a place to plan his revenge against his rival, Miles Leonard (Tom Bennett), who stole his dream job at Stanford University.
