Asylum 49 is the fifth episode of the thirteenth season of the popular supernatural series A Haunting. The episode takes viewers on a bone-chilling journey to Tooele, Utah, where a former mental institution, Asylum 49, is said to be home to spirits of former patients and staff.
The episode opens with the property's new owner, Gary, speaking about the history of Asylum 49. The building started out as a poor house before being converted into a mental facility in the early 1900s. Throughout its history, the asylum was underfunded and overcrowded, leading to claims of inhumane treatment of patients and staff.
The first encounter with the supernatural comes from Gary's daughter, who reports seeing a figure in the hallway. The family is then joined by a team of paranormal investigators who set up cameras and conduct an investigation to try and capture evidence of the hauntings.
Throughout the episode, the team experiences strange occurrences and capture some eerie recordings of voices and footsteps. They also discover that some of the hospital's patients were subjected to electroshock therapy that was performed without anesthesia, causing immense physical pain and emotional trauma.
As the team continues their investigation, they uncover the dark history of the hospital that includes reports of patients being tied to beds and left for days on end without food or water. The investigators also conclude that many of the spirits are likely that of former staff members, including a man named Jack who was responsible for performing lobotomies on patients.
The team ultimately decides to perform a cleansing ritual in an attempt to rid the asylum of its negative energy. The ritual involves surrounding the property with salt and sage and reciting prayers to cleanse the area.
Overall, Asylum 49 is a bone-chilling episode that will leave viewers with goosebumps. The show does an excellent job of bringing the history of the hospital to life, and the investigators capture enough proof to leave even the biggest sceptics questioning what they believe. It is a haunting reminder of the inhumane treatment of mental illness and the importance of ensuring those who suffer from it receive the proper care and treatment.
