In A Different World season 3 episode 18, titled "A Camp Fire Story," the gang at Hillman College heads to the great outdoors for a camping trip. Dwayne and Ron plan on using this trip to teach young people through a unique camping experience. Upon arrival, the students pitch their tents and gather together for a campfire story. Kim tells the story of a crazed killer who terrifies college campuses and takes out his victims with a hook-hand. Everyone is spooked, to say the least.

As the night wears on, Walter and Jaleesa head back to their tent for some alone time, while Whitley and Dwayne face their own set of problems. Dwayne, realizing he didn't pack a sleeping bag, ends up sleeping next to Whitley in her tent, but the two argue instead of sleeping. Meanwhile, Walter gets spooked when he hears noises outside his tent. When he ends up hearing strange noises, he panics and wakes up the whole campsite.

The next day, things get worse when Kim mysteriously vanishes. The students band together to find her, suspecting that she may have been taken by the hook-handed killer that Kim had told a ghost story about the night before. The group splits up to search for Kim, with each subgroup having its own issues. Ron and Freddie team up, Dwayne and Whitley bicker about every little thing, and Walter and Jaleesa encounter some more spooky happenings in the woods.

Amidst all of the chaos, the group eventually reunites, where they find Kim safe and sound, albeit a little lost. The group has shared a bonding experience with each other during this camping trip, realizing that their fear may have been unwarranted.

"A Camp Fire Story" explores the theme of fear and how it can impact individuals and groups as they navigate the unfamiliar terrain of the wilderness. By delving into different types of fear, such as the fear of being alone or the fear of the unknown, the episode navigates the complexities of emotions. Throughout the show, the characters must reevaluate their biases around fear and work together to face their deepest feelings in order to succeed in finding and bringing Kim home. This episode showcases the importance of teamwork and the power of human connection in overcoming adversity.
